Basement & Bathtub Mojo

Joy to you!

Those of you who know my story, know that my dream realization mojo really kicked into gear from the depths of the dark, musty, basement apartment where I lived … for 3 years!

bathYep. At the time, I was absolutely drowning in debt and I spent most Friday and Saturday nights with my cat. Trust me, the metaphor was not lost on me that my basement “digs” were a constant reminder that I was LITERALLY underground. Yet, it was there that I started to dream … determined and believing that that there had GOT to be a better way!

I used to look out my tiny-tiny window – with the view of the sidewalk and the tires of cars passing by – and I’d dream. While I didn’t know it at the time, this is where seeds of Create Your Life! were born.

Now, not only was my apartment in a basement, it had a teeny-tiny *black* bathroom – yes, black paint(!) was on the walls. (Trust me, I thought many times about re-painting, but I simply couldn’t stand to be IN there long enough to repaint it!)  My teeny-tiny black bathroom, of course, had a stand-up shower.  Oh, how I DREAMED of a bathtub!!

So when I *finally* moved out – and bought a house (which is another story for another time) – a bathtub was one of my non-negotiable requirements. And to this day, I love and cherish my bathtub.  It is, to me, a sacred place of respite. A few candles, some bath salts – sometimes a glass of wine – and my bathtub becomes an at-home spaaaaaaahhh…  A mini-vacation. No packing or travel required.

How ’bout you?  What is the ultimate retreat for you? What are some of the ways you give yourself a delicious break? How do you create sacred, rejuvenating time for yourself?

Do YOU need a vacation? Or, at the minimum, a break for some “you time” to unwind, to regroup, to rejuvenate?  And really … who couldn’t benefit from having more R & R?

Do You Dream of Time OFF?

Taking time off is an important part of holistic self-care and well-being. Here in the U.S., summer is fast approaching …a common time for long weekends with family and friends, days at the beach, boating, camping, hiking, gardening, barbeques, and just kickin’ back for some rest and relaxation!

Sound refreshing and inviting? Comforting and balancing? Or does it create a feeling of inner confusion and anxiety … wanting to take time off but fearing that there will be a high price to pay?

vacaWhen was the last time YOU took an honest vacation? When was the last time you truly “unplugged” from the daily grind and felt renewed, refreshed, and invigorated?

Imagine YOU … not working … and not even thinking about work.  Your energy is instead fully available for other things. It might be an hour, a weekend, a week, or a full month!  Either way, it’s precious and delightful time OFF!

Have YOU taken time off yet this year? Do you have plans for time off in the coming months? It’s not too late (or too early) to start planning and schedule this time on your calendar – you could do this right now.  Why not take this opportunity to sit down with your calendar, decide on and then DO whatever needs to be done to support YOU having some time off?

Notice: What’s coming up for you?  Are you hearing yourself say, for example:

  • “When I’m done with this project then maybe I’ll look at my calendar.”
  • “I don’t have time, with my family commitments and all..”
  • “I haven’t worked hard enough to really deserve time off.”
  • “There’s no money in the budget for a vacation.”
  • “Time off will only set me back and create more work.”
  • “I would love to but…(fill in the blank)”

Let me say … I am in no way suggesting that you re-mortgage your house or plunk down the credit card to go on an extravagant vacation. Yet here’s the risk of letting these thoughts stop you from saying “YES” to time off altogether …

It’s exactly these kinds of thought patterns of undeservedness or “someday” or “later” thinking, that can lead to a sense of martyrdom, to feeling unappreciated, to setting yourself up for burn out, AND neglecting your need for R & R can even have an adverse effect on your healthkiddie pool and well-being.

We *all* need time off!  And, truth is, taking time off allows us to be much more productive and engaged during our time on!

Time off is about shifting gears to support your holistic well-being. Time off is a KEY piece to creating true Success Synergy: a balance of working AND not working. It is an investment in well-being, and frankly … the alternative is unsustainable.

If you DON’T give yourself time to re-charge, your body will eventually demand it but – why wait ’til your bod is SCREAMING for you honor this basic need?!?  Your know better. It’s really about being someone who honors this need and allows *space* in your mind, in your heart, and in your LIFE for what nourishes you – doing what you need to do to prioritize and support of your own self-care. And really: if you don’t do it, who will?

Even if you don’t know yet exactly how or where you’re going to spend your time off, it’s important to make a commitment to carving out that time NOW. That means time unplugged – not working. (Yes, even if you *love* your job. And yes, even if the budget is tight.)

Again – there are no rules about distance, duration, or cost. A frankly, an extravagant vacation doesn’t not necessary mean a more rejuvenating vacation. So, make it your own. It could be a stay-cation!  Time off can be as simple as YOU, a magazine, and a lawn chair.  It’s about carving out “you time” – time dedicated to NOT working and NOT thinking about work. Claim it and make it yours!  Enjoy!

May your dreams always inspire more than they intimidate,

Meet a Create Your Life! Dreamer (You are NOT the only one.)

Meet JaninaJanina

“Have you had such amazing opportunities in your life that seemed like they were delivered to the wrong person or at the wrong time?

You think: “This couldn’t be for me! This is too much! It sounds great but add one more thing to my plate?”.

But something inside you feels inspired to go with it and to go FOR it!  And when you look back, you know that was a GIFT and it was such a pivotal event that changed so much?

Two years ago, when I was presented with and considered the 8-week Dream Acceleration™ Program those were the questions I was asking myself!!!  But when the nudge and inner feelings said “go for it”, I committed to devote 2 months to learn more and be open to whatever that meant for me at the time.

For 8 weeks, I experienced emotions that went all over the place – scared to learn something new about myself, excited to grow and expand, grateful for meeting new people and forming relationships who I knew were key in supporting me in the changes, learnings and shifting that I was experiencing during that time.  Now I feel NO REGRETS!  Those 8 weeks of material gave me so much to think about in my life – I felt like I had more CHOICES and discovered I had PERMISSION to decide what was right and good for me and SEE what was really possible!

When an opportunity comes along like this – AND at a significant price reduction – how can you not at least see what it is about and consider how it might create shifts in your life? If you have thoughts, concerns or questions, please feel free to message me.”

Dear Dream, I’m ready to deepen our relationship

How would you describe your ideal mate? Perhaps you’ve thought of an image of that person; someone in good health, tall/short, nice smile, athletic, active, generous, social, a dancer, a biker, a skier – the list could go on, right? Or maybe you don’t have a list of your ideal mate’s physical characteristics or interests but certainly you know how you want the interaction within your relationship to be and, more importantly, you likely know how you want to FEEL in this relationship.

dear dream

You might desire your relationship to be open, honest, caring and loving. You want to FEEL cared for, loved, heard, respected, trusted, supported, appreciated and understood. Because, let’s face it, feeling these things in relationships feels good!

Now, what if I asked you about your relationship with your dream?

  • How would you describe your dream?
  • What does it look like to you?
  • How would you describe your “relationship” with your dream?
  • How do you FEEL about your dream?
  • What does it means to you in your life?

The clearer you get on your CURRENT relationship to your dream, the greater awareness you will have to take your relationship with your dream to the next level!

One topic that is explored at a much deeper level during the 8-week Dream Acceleration™ Program is about relationships. We all know what it means to nurture our relationships with others, right? Well, during the 8-week Dream Acceleration™ Program, to shine a light on and become more aware of our relationship with our dreams, we imagine switching places with our dreams and what it might feel like to be a dream of yours, in a relationship with you.

I believe in my heart of hearts,

that your dreams are the voice of your soul,

and listening is your gift to the world.

As the saying goes, it takes two to tango. So consider your dream’s perspective:

  • What would it be like to BE your dream in a relationship with YOU?
  • How are you treating your dream right now?
  • Does your dream feel well cared for?
  • Does your dream feel ignored, disregarded, smothered or maybe downright unappreciated?
  • Does your dream feel like no one believes in it or trusts it?
  • Does your dream feel loved?

What are you noticing? Honesty can only serve you here so just notice whatever comes up for you.

You are in a relationship with your dreams – right now. It’s the truth!

These questions are not to make you feel bad, but to shine a light on your CURRENT relationship with your dream and raise your awareness around this. It’s about nurturing your RELATIONSHIP with your dreams…giving them love and attention, and easing up on all the anxiety and doubts that may otherwise surround your relationship.

And, this is not to say that you won’t have doubts or that you need to deny or ignore your hesitations and concerns. But rather…that you begin to just Raise Your Awareness about who you are BEING in your relationship to what it is that you desire.

Another point that is stated many times throughout the Dream Acceleration™ Program is that we always create from the present moment … like the red star on a trail map. You must first identify where you ARE before you can get where you want to go.

As you get more acquainted and familiar with YOUR PART in the relationship, and consciously put *more* attention and energy there…such wonder and possibility awaits!

Bravely DECLARE that NOW is your “someday”

– simply because YOU said so!

What marathons mean to me

marathonThere are a lot of things happening in our world right now … things that don’t make sense and have us asking a lot of tough questions.  Maybe you are way beyond the point of asking questions – and *really* just want answers! How do we make sense of it all? What’s it all mean?  Why is this happening now? And what can or should we do about it?

I don’t have the answers, but what I DO know is that a powerful way to bridge healing and understanding, is through sharing our feelings and our stories. So with that in mind and heart … I want to share a bit about what marathons mean to me.

The day after the bombing, I read an article that really resonated entitled “The People Who Watch Marathons” by Erin Gloria Ryan. Here’s a quote from the article:

One of the many puzzling aspects of yesterday’s attacks was the question of what, exactly, the perpetrators thought they’d accomplish by targeting what basically amounts to a celebration of human tenacity. If anything, the tragedy in Boston will further solidify the bond between runner and spectator … If anyone thought this attack would discourage the runners or the watchers, they’ve clearly never been to a marathon.”

Ditto THAT!  As a kid, I saw my dad, at 50 years old, proudly cross the finish line of his first marathon (and then throw up). I also watched and celebrated as my sister who, as part of a relay team, crossed a marathon finish line. Several other relatives and friends of mine have also prevailed over this extraordinary 26.2 mile challenge.

On several occasions, I’ve been known to attend, to cheer, and to be moved to tears – for hours – at marathons with no one I know (or know that I know) in them.  And while it pales in comparison to a marathon, on the receiving end, as someone who has run two 5K races, I’ve been so incredibly grateful for the energy and encouragement of spectators.

My heart is with all who were effected by what happened in Boston on April 15th.

In the spirit of banding together, let’s take pause and really invest in giving ourselves the gift of time for reflection, to consider how to best make YOUR contribution to the joy and peace of the world.  The time is NOW.

May your dreams always inspire more than they intimidate,

Dreaming is Fun

nycaptA few weeks ago, after declaring that I want to spend more time in – and possibly move to – NYC, I signed up to receive email updates about NYC rental listings through Elliman Properties.  I went on their website and created my “profile” with my price ranges, etc. so I could receive email notifications of the shoe boxes available for me to choose from.  :-/

Since then, I’ve been receiving daily emails for, not rentals – but properties for sale, into the range of $27 Million. Funny, huh?

I’ve written to them twice about this and received a reply that they fixed it for me.  But they didn’t.  I continue to receive sale listings into the millions, which I’ve decided is fine with me for now because I’m actually really enjoying it.  (Could the Universe be telling me something?)

Anyway, of all I’ve seen, there’s one listing (that happens to be under $1M – cheap!) that makes my dreamin’ self swoon. Wanna see it?

Do you realize your dream risks?

Joy to You!

As Dream Realization Coach and “Dream Queen,” I want to share a dream of my own – AND a special Dream Acceleration™ Exercise to support YOUR dream realization process with a make-it-real Dream Risk Assessment.

The photo on the right is of a recent dance “field trip” to NYC with some of my Providence Salsa Family.

We had a BLAST – after a 3-hour lesson in the afternoon with world-class teachers, we found our way to a Salsa Social at night that was AWESOME. Talk about energy! Whew! By the end of the night, my feet where aching, I was drenched in sweat, and my heart was SO happy.

Let the record show: I love ‘lil Rhody.

And every few months, I find an excuse to go to NYC to get my Big Apple fix, which is something that can continue … BUT lately, I’m finding that the more I go, the less I want to leave!

I’ve done the Risk Assessment Exercise (see below for details) about my budding dream to live in NYC, and I’ll be honest, my list in column #1 is L-O-N-G!  But since I think I’ll always wonder if I don’t (column #2) … I’m starting to take steps to plant seeds and find out more about what would need to happen to make the move. In case there was any doubt … know that we – you and I – are absolutely in this ongoing dream realization process together.

Let’s support one another.  Please leave a comment below about your own dreams-in-the-works and your Risk Assessment results, ok?

A Dream Acceleration Exercise for You:

In order to discover what’s under the bed or hiding in the unrealized dreams closet, this exercise will bring awareness to, and shine a light on, what might have you stuck.  This is a chance to set aside those reasonable reasons long enough to honor your DEEPER wisdom, connect to your bravery, and gain clarity about why you are where you are.

Ready? Set? Go!

Grab a blank piece of paper and fold it in half vertically or draw a simple table with two columns.

Label column 1: “Risks In Realizing my Dream of (fill in the blank).”

Then jot down the RISKS and costs that come to your mind about pursuing and realizing your dream.  Ask yourself these questions: What’s at risk if I am living my dream?  What do I need to consider in taking this leap of faith?  If you’re like most, it’s probably pretty easy for you to come up with risks considering your dream realization journey.

And most people stop right there. What’s too often NOT considered is identifying the costs of NOT pursuing your dream. What’s at risk if you DON’T go for it …  if you DON’T move forward into action?

Column 2: “Risks of NOT Pursuing My Dream of (fill in the blank).”
Jot down the first things that come up for you around these questions:
  • What’s at risk if I don’t take action and move forward on my dream?
  • What’s the risk of always wondering?
  • What might the impact be on your happiness – even on your health?
  • How confident and proud of yourself will you be if you don’t explore the possibility?
  • And, lastly, how will it feel to always wonder about what could have been?

Only you know this answer for you, but as someone who has coached folks from age 18 to 78, I know keeping your deepest desires and dreams stored away, in a neat and tidy little box, to be a HUGE RISK!

Allow this exercise to support you.  More often than not, when there’s an honest assessment of not only the risks of going-for-it, but also the risks of staying exactly where you ARE … the costs of not finding out often far outweigh the potential costs and risks of going for it.

However big, small, silly or vague you may think your dream is, I believe that like the little sprouting acorn, your dreams are the voice of your soul, ready to burst through any obstacles and grow and live in the world.  And, there’s simply no way around the fact that in order to follow your dreams, you’ll absolutely need to leave your safe have and align yourself with support from those who believe in you and your dreams.
